Happy Halloween, ghosts and ghostettes. Movie madness prevails.
1) Batman sequel: fact or wishful thinking?: Megan Fox as Catwoman: The British tabloid, The Sun, reports that Megan Fox has landed the role of Catwoman in the upcoming Batman third installment of the new series. They are the only ones making this claim and they are a tabloid but it does make for fun speculation. Ms. Fox would be in good company if this pans out. Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal in "Batman Returns" was one of her most erotic characterizations. Likewise, Halle Berry filled that suit quite nicely. Catwoman's alter-ego, Selina Kyle, was originally intended as a super-villain, a feminine feline Achille's heel for 'Batman'. Recent interpretations show her as a possible love-interest for him (i.e., Bruce Wayne). Production of the third installment begins next year. Ms. Fox certainly has the seductively sultry sex appeal for this role but some question her onscreen presence. A role like this could be a breakout of sorts for her. Remember, she's already commited to return as Mikaela Banes in Transformers 3 which will also begin shooting sometime next year. Stay tuned.
2) Alien prequel: Ridley Scott returns to the franchise: "It's a brand new box of tricks," Scott said. "We know what the road map is and the screenplay is now being put on paper." 20th Century Fox is looking to breathe new life into a franchise that has been badly abused since "Aliens". Jon Spaihts has been hired to write this prequel. Spaihts has scripted "Shadow 19" for WB and the space journey epic "Passengers" for Morgan Creek. He also is writing "Children of Mars" for Disney and producer Scott Rudin, as well as rewriting "St. George and the Dragon" for Sony/Red Wagon. Scott is a fine director and Spaihts is a very good writer so this cannot be dismissed as rubbish--yet.
3) Dune: Peter Berg has been detached as director of "Dune", the Frank Herbert classic, at Paramount. The search is on to replace him. Neill Blompkamp (District 9) and Neil Marshall (The Descent) appear to be the frontrunners. However, there are trepidations involved with trusting this film to relatively inexperienced, moderately successful directors. Whoever gets the job must stay within a $175 million budget.
4) Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton: coming March 5, 2010 to conventional and IMAX theatres. It stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham-Carter, Crispin Glover, Alan Rickman and Christopher Lee, among others. The extended trailer is now available and is very intriguing.
5) Invictus Trailer: The Clint Eastwood-directed film is a true story starring the incredible Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela who tries to rally the people of South Africa through the language of sport, namely rugby, at the 1995 World Cup Championship matches. Freeman is no stranger to working with Eastwood and this one looks to be every bit as good as "Unforgiven".
6) FEATURE STORY: THE EXPENDABLES: written by, directed by and starring Sly Stallone, this is an action/adventure story centering around a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator. Interest is high and early reports are favorable and this could grow into a two or three picture franchise depending on who survives. The ensemble cast includes the three biggest and best action hero actors (arguably) of all time. Not just Sly but Arnold Schwartzenegger and Bruce Willis (in cameos that establish the film). Van Damme and Kurt Russell reportedly turned down the chance to join this cast. Those who did not turn down parts include Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Charisma Carpenter, among others. A release date has not been definitely set but it should hit screens with a BIG bang in August or September 2010. Please remember, as always, things change quickly in Hollyweird.
7) True Grit: John Wayne is being reimagined by the Coen Brothers who are also producing this one with Scott Rudin and Stephen Spielberg. Jeff Bridges is already on board in the John Wayne role of Rooster Cogburn. Cogburn and a 14-year-old girl are tracking the killer of her father through hostile Indian territory along with a fellow lawman. Talks are under way with Matt Damon to be that lawman and with Josh Brolin to be the killer. Hoping both actors take those parts (and even if they don't), it goes into production next spring for a late 2010 release.
8) Short Circuit remake: Director Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop; Rebound; Daddy Day Care) will do the remake. That should effectively kill this film although it will not put it out of our misery.
In Theatres Nov. 6: The Box (Cameron Diaz, Frank Langella, James Marsden); The Fourth Kind (Milla Jovovich); A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey).
