Let’s be blunt – School doesn’t (hopefully) provide just education, it also is a huge daycare system.

That’s part of the reason so many parents get nervous about any changes in school district schedules.

Parents in Jefferson County are worried about when the school year starts , and now parents in the Denver Public Schools are grouchy about more planning time for teachers .

The new contract between the Denver Public Schools and the Denver Classroom Teachers Association calls for five additional late-start days to give teachers more time for training.

Several parents criticized the plan at a school board meeting Sept. 18. Working parents complained that late starts put them in a tough spot. But, given that the late-start days are in the contract, the board had no choice but to approve them.

More training and planning time for teachers is always welcome, but districts should be creative about coming up with supervised play, study halls or other at-school activities to keep kids on the school grounds and give working parents a break.
