Three reasons why I love Chico's Mexican Grill:
1) It's near downtown Phoenix and is quick enough for a busy worker's lunch hour.
2) All of their food is lard-free, allowing vegetarians to breathe a little easier.
3) Many of their menu items come with a lower-priced vegetarian option, making it wallet-friendly.
Bonus: fresh salsa bar!
Chico's is a great alternative to full-service restaurants if you're craving Mexican food for lunch. It's just north of downtown at 7th Street and McDowell, and their kitchen and staff are quick enough that it's doable during your lunch hour. Most entrees are under $7 and are enough for two meals, making it very affordable.
They have the staples - enchiladas, burritos, chimichangas. Their nachos are fantastic, topped with real, freshly-melted cheese, beans and a really good red taco sauce. It's big enough that I only order it if I have a friend willing to share it. The taco salad is served in a taco shell that, while fried, is slightly puffy and very tasty. With a healthy serving of rice and beans, plus veggies, it can definitely be shared or stretched to two meals. And the California burrito is also more than a meal (rice, beans, lettuce, cheese, salsa, fresh guacamole) that, as the special on Tuesdays, is a steal for about $5.
Chico's also has a breakfast menu that, while limited, includes a vegetarian option. The Huevos Mexicano burrito has potatoes fried sauteed with onions, scrambled eggs and cheese. At $1.99, you can't beat it, especially when combined with fresh salsa. (Just be sure to bring gum, it's not a friendly way to start the day.)
If you go to Chico's right at noon, you might have to wait in line but it's worth it. Stop by on your way to a game downtown or after work. They're open until 9pm most nights.
Delicious Mexican food, fast, much better than a drive-through!
