Most Mediterranean restaurants offer Greek food. Most diners forget that the Mediterranean has another side: Egypt.
The Nile Cafe takes the Egyptian approach to Mediterranean dining. You'll see a lot of familiar options on the menu here but it's definitely got a different twist - authentic Egyptian flavors. An Egyptian guy runs the shop, with his mother cooking in the back. That's true Egyptian food they serve.
The lentil soup is very similar to what is found at Indian restaurants (known as dahl), but has a slightly sweeter flavor thanks to the mildly-sauteed white onions. The falafel has the same flavors as falafel served at Greek restaurants, but the Egyptian version is softer and more moist. Their wraps are served in white or wheat pita, and when they say it includes lettuce, they mean thick, green leafy lettuce. No cheap iceberg lettuce here.
The menu is extremely vegetarian friendly in two notable ways: one, it has a significant number of vegetarian entrees; and two, it highlights which entrees are vegan (many of the vegetarian ones would qualify as vegan if not for the tahini sauce).
The Nile Cafe has two convenient locations: one in downtown Phoenix along Roosevelt Row and another in Scottsdale near SkySong.
