Director Darren Aronofsky's upcoming Robocop film has been delayed until 2011, according to MGM, the parent company of the Robocop franchise.
Aronofsky first gained prominence with his lo-fi alt-math thriller Pi, and then traumatised audiences with Requiem for a Dream.
He followed that project with the sci-fi thinker The Fountain, which also encountered preproduction delays, which saw the film made with neither Brad Pitt nor heavy special effects, instead utilizing Hugh Jackman doing yoga and innovative underwater macrophotography.
Aronofsky went on to direct The Wrestler, giving him extra momentum to get into production on his Robocop project, which is described by insiders as more of a reimagining than a sequel. Think Batman Begins.
In the interim, Aronofsky has been taking a break after making the critically acclaimed The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke, and is said to be quietly developing his Robocop reboot.
The talented director also has another project on the table which might go into production before Robocop thanks to the recent addition of Natalie Portman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Portman is attached to star in Aronofsky’s next project, Black Swan.
Black Swan is a supernatural thriller set in the New York City ballet. It follows a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself in a tight competition with a rival dancer. With a big performance on the horizon, the rivalry between them becomes fierce and ugly. While that could be vicious enough territory for a film to explore, the ballerina must face an even more terrifying question: whether her rival is even real or just a delusion.
Aronofsky has been developing the project since 2007, and originally had it set up at Universal. The director recently brought the original script, written by John McLaughlin, to his own Protozoa Pictures for a rewrite.
