The Old Town Scottsdale Farmer’s Market has gone underground. Don’t misunderstand. They aren’t acting sneaky in a secret spy movie kind of way. This farmer’s market has literally taken their business to the parking ramp underneath their normal location. The market has been located at the corner of 1st Street and Brown in Old Town across from the Old Mission. A parking ramp, located underneath that location is the new home of the Old Town Market to beat the heat.
There are signs up top at the regular location to direct people to follow the stairs or take the elevator to the market directly below. As usual, people show up with dogs and bikes and their cloth grocery bags ready to see what fresh produce the farmer’s have brought in and what new designs the crafters have made.
Maya’s Farm buzzed with activity as they quickly sold out of twenty cases of heirloom tomatoes by 9 o’clock. They had also sold out off arugula and melons. Next week owner Maya Dailey plans to bring a lot more produce. She said the crowd had been steady all morning. “I was apprehensive about the crowd,” she said, not knowing what to expect. She was pleasantly surprised. She still had beautiful basil, squash, onions, and lots of beautiful flowers.

Digestif Chef Payton Curry was there selling his fresh mozzarella, quiche, and juice. He plans to be stretching and pulling the cheese for the crowd next week.

Walt Pitts played his guitar help from a youngster who played the maracas.

There was a wide variety of seasonal produce grown with organic methods. Apple butter, Terra Verde jellies and sauces, tamales, free range beef, and lots of fantastic breads.
While there were plenty of signs, old habits die hard, and some people were still looking for the tents of the market. One man stopped his car in front of a huge Farmer’s Market sign to ask where to find it.

The Old Town Scottsdale Farmer’s Market plans to run in their underground location through the Fourth of July. They will be open from 8 to noon every Saturday. Lighting, ventilation, and fans kept the market relatively comfortable for summer in Arizona.
