In my previous article, I said “Step out of the way, let creativity and the power of the subconscious take over.” I talked about it in the context of religion. In this article I will expand on it in the context of Psychology, as well as the psychology behind Huna, the Hawaiian practice of magic and religion.

Although I majored in Psychology and took graduate courses in Psychology, an expert in Psychology I am not. Nor am I an expert in Huna. But I do know that the subconscious is very powerful, as, among other things-which I shall discuss in this article, it is where our memory is stored. I invite psychologists and practitioners of Huna to correct me if I my information is wrong so as not to mislead readers. i also welcome additional elaboration from these experts.  .  .

In this article I will be talking about my working relationship with the subconscious, about how this relationship has been most rewarding for me throughout college, graduate school, my career, and my personal life. The subject matter may not be new to many readers, but I suspect many readers, if not most, are familiar with it only from the intellectual standpoint, a standpoint that is outside looking in.

To know anything in actuality, one must live it, not just read books about it.  I would give up all my formal education- my undergraduate and graduate degrees- for the experiential knowledge about which formal education can barely approximate. Perhaps one day, it will be possible to instill experiential knowledge in the classroom, much like giving flu shots- ok, students, stand in line, zap! There would be no book worms, no intellectuals, no pseudo intellectuals (like me?), no barriers to essences, no fancy degrees to flaunt, etc.

There are situations now in which experiential learning is common place: resident doctors in hospitals, nursing students in clinical training. What about sports? Football players practice as though they’re in a real game. Soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen train as though they are in real combat. Anyone wanting to become a Psychoanalyst must undergo Psychoanalysis. What’s a better way to understand what patients experience than to experience it yourself?

Sometimes we forget that academic disciplines evolved because of man’s curiosity, desire and need to explore and understand Nature. Psychology evolved because of our curiosity to explore and understand the mind; Physics evolved to study matter, and History the events of the past. Sometimes we tend to think that the reverse is true; we tend to forget that these disciplines only try to define what’s out there. We see this happening in scientific methodology. We forget it is just a methodology. Just because a phenomenon doesn’t pass rigid scientific criteria, it does not mean it doesn’t exist. As Father Manny said (read How to think about God), we don’t invite God to come to us, He invites us to His.

Way before the major religions of the world came about, there already were different forms of worship. These forms evolved because man was afraid of the unknown and sought protection. The major religions evolved on the same basis. Man needed protection and salvation.  Thus, add Religion to the list. Everything we have accomplished here on earth, no matter how great, only represents our effort to know and live with Nature and Its laws. It’s not Nature.

The Subconscious, I believe, is.

As academia’s disciplines are man’s effort to control the outside world, our ego is our personal effort to control the Nature in us- the subconscious. Given this definition, we can say that our subconscious is as natural as the air we breathe and is our direct link to the God. When the Late Christian author, Catherine Marshall, (see The healing power of surrender) resigned from her ego-driven attempt to reach God through prayer, healing automatically began. By surrendering, she cleared the pathway for the subconscious to deliver God’s response.

The subconscious is the means through which the Hawaiian Kahuna talks to God. When they pray, they begin first by impressing the subconscious. They define their want in clear thought, with or without words; the subconscious will understand. Impressing the subconscious can be done in many ways- all of which, however, involve intense emotions, or getting the adrenaline flowing. After a while, the Kahuna lets go, confident that the subconscious has been reached. When they let go, the message disappears with the subsiding adrenaline and reappears in the subconscious. The subconscious then sends it along. This is, in simplified form, the Kahuna’s secret, according to Max Freedom Long in his book Behind the Secret Science of Miracles.

Catherine Marshall stumbled across this secret of awakening the subconscious.  But she didn’t step aside, as the kahuna knows to do. When she gave up hope and resigned herself to death, in essence she was stepping aside, and, when she stepped aside, God answered her prayers.

I became familiar with the Kahuna’s way of communicating with God when I first read Behind the Secret Science of Miracles.in high school. The Kahuna’s way has helped me overcome many obstacles in my life. I succeeded in college when I was not supposed to, after flunking my sophomore year in high school and graduating with a D- average with the following class.  I succeed in getting my masters when I already was married with two children and barely making a living. I succeeded in my 30 years as a Social Worker/Researcher/Program Specialist. After that, I succeeded in comforting the bereaved and for seven years had been one of the most sought after funeral directors, if not the most.

I could not have accomplished all this given my poor and isolated plantation upbringing. I could not have accomplished all this without using the kahuna’s way reaching God. I am still growing and am excited to see what’s more to come. I am already accomplished in singing, playing musical instruments, and writing songs.  And I taught myself to paint. (see for yourself: http://www.crackedsky.com). What other areas will I excel in? I am excited!

While all the above have come about through the subconscious, It has been a very slow process for me to get out of my self-imposed shell. I am not so self confident as you might think. I still shy away from singing solo in church choir, although I was the soloist for many years. In the same way, I have my doubts about my paintings; thus, I won’t hold a show, despite urging by my close friend and fellow painter and photographer Roy Okano (http://www.rokano,com) .

However, the fact that I have come out to share my thoughts to the world as an Examiner indicates that my growth, although slow, is still continuing. I have surprised many people who know me to be naturally shy. My friend Winona wrote, “Very interesting, Charles; I’m so proud of you.”

I have been keeping the Kahuna’s secret secret. But I think It’s time for me to tell so others can reap the benefits too. How does that famous saying go?  “Seek and ye shall find; ask and ye shall receive.”
