A quick review of a recent stop at a craft beer bar in New York City.
On Tuesday, I dropped into Hop Devil Grill, a beer bar that specializes in simple Mexican fare on St. Marks at Avenue A in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, for a pint and some tacos.
As craft beer bars become more commonplace and establishments compete for business, hopefully beer drinkers will begin to see the next revolution in craft... the craft beer special!
With 24 brews on tap -- primarily consisting of American crafts -- Hop Devil certainly is promising from the moment you step in the door and see those draft handles attractively lined up on the back wall behind the bar.
I started my evening with their namesake, Victory's Hop Devil Ale. Unfortunately, the pint tasted a little off with a slightly egg-y nose. The bartender informed me that's how the beer tastes (and though I have to disagree, Hop Devil is not a beer who's tasting notes I've committed to memory). Despite his assertion that the beer was fine, the friendly barkeep insisted I pick a brew I'd prefer. Big points there.
My replacement beer was a Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA. I couldn't have been happier.
Other beers on draft included Boulder Oatmeal Stout, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA and River Horse Double White. Only Lionshead and Guinness seemed slightly out of place.
But as I hinted at above, the best part about Hop Devil are the specials. Drafts are half price from 4pm to 8pm, Monday through Friday. As an added bonus, Tuesday's are $1 taco night. The tacos won't rewrite the history of Mexican food, but they certainly top Taco Bell. Plus, patrons can choose from a number of fillings (including chorizo and vegetarian) and whether to go for hard or soft.
After 10 solid tasting tacos and 3 great beers, our final tab was $20. Score.
Based on this visit, consider Hop Devil Grill: Highly Recommended.
