Everybody knows one of the highlights of football season is hanging out with your friends, drinking beverages (this might be a family site!) and screaming at the tv. Where better to do it than at a local bar, right? Well, I know that people are always looking for a fun place to watch sports, and particularly the 49ers.
So, I thought I'd roll out a short list of some of my favorite places to check out the 49ers (and other sporting events). I'll be honest, some of I've been to plenty of times, some I've heard great things of word of mouth. For the word-of-mouth ones, I have good sources and trust their judgment. I know I'm going to miss a million places because everyone has their favorite haunt. Feel free to post your own places in the comments. This could turn into a great resource. Additionally, if people post other places I'll be happy to check them out and run updated posts about good places to watch the 49ers.
Ace's: They're located on the northeast corner of Sutter and Hyde and it may be one of the funnest places in the city to watch sports. While it is a New York bar, fans of every color flock to Ace's to watch their team play. The best part though is not the game, but the barbeque they run every Sunday in the fall that includes tri-tip, sausages and chicken, cooked up right outside the bar. The best part is that it's free (tips are greatly encouraged for the hard working folks at Ace's).
Green's Sports Bar: Located on Polk Street, just south of Green, Green's Sports Bar is a fantastic option for watching the 49ers and just about any other team and sport. It can get a little crowded, but come on, that's the whole point right? My two favorite experiences there were one of the Warriors-Mavericks games and also when my 15th-seeded American University Eagles hung with the 2 seed Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of last year's NCAA tournament. While they don't serve food, you can bring in food whenever you want. Of course if you make a food run, make sure and ask the bartender if he wants anything!
McTeague's Saloon: McTeague's opened up in August on Polk between Bush and Sutter and is owned by the next door bar, O'Reilly's Holy Grail. I have yet to watch a 49ers game there, but in my other visits, the bartenders have been quite friendly and told me they had big plans for football season. Definitely gonna check that out before the end of the season.
Union Square Sports Bar: Another place I've been to but never for a 49ers game, they're located on O'Farrell Street, a block from Powell, right near Union Square. They've got a whole ton of memorabilia and when I've gone in for other sporting events it gets nice and crowded with a great buzz of excitement.
Feel free to add more because I know there are tons of great places to catch the 49ers. As I expand my horizons I'll update this list.
