Even with the vast number of recession-driven specials and prix fixe menus, you would be hard-pressed to spend less than $20 for dinner and a drink at a Center City Philadelphia restaurant.
Oyster House is filling that bargain gap with a $14 fish and chips special on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wash down your dinner with a $3 Yards Brawler draft beer, and with tax and tip, the check will total just north of $20.
I'm happy to report you won't be slumming by opting for this low-end meal. On a recent Tuesday, the fish –– day boat cod –– was flaky on the inside and crunchy on the outside, while the chips –– a pile of hand-cut fries –– were crispy and satisfying.
If you're not in the mood for fish and chips, Oyster House also features on its regular menu a rich and creamy oyster stew that's just $13 or $16, depending on whether you opt for the larger box oysters. A shared smoked trout salad for $9 nicely rounds out the experience, without adding much sticker shock to the final bill.
