Launched in October 2008, the Kangaroo Club is a place to meet, play, learn and interact for parents and kids together. Drop in for a Kangaroo playgroup for just $5 or bring your child to one of several age-appropriate fun-filled Kindermusik classes (see below for more details). The Kangaroo Club meets at David's Dance Center in Malden, conveniently located near the Malden Center T stop on the Orange Line.
Here is what Talita had to say on being a mamaprenuer:
Why did you decide to open the Kangaroo Club?
The idea for Kangaroo Club was born during the last months of my pregnancy. I had been doing the "office job", and I realized I was unable to unwind and enjoy my family at the end of a stressful day. The minute my son smiled at me for the first time, it hit me. I wanted to touch the lives of other families, and make children laugh and learn for a living. I taught English as a second language for over 9 years, so the teacher in me screamed with joy.
How did the business grow since the opening?
I opened Kangaroo Club in October 2008, so we are taking tiny baby steps into the business world. We are in the process of spreading the word out, and I have met very supportive people along the way. We are moving to a new location in Malden, and that might be the little extra push we need to grow. It's been an incredible learning experience so far.
What makes your business different and/or better from other playgroups?
My mission at Kangaroo Club is to bring more than music, movement and fun to families. I want it to be a resourceful place where families can feel at home, because they know I will be there to listen, and answer their questions, and/or guide them in the right direction.
How do you balance being a mom and a business owner?
Not only I am a mom, and a business owner, but I am also a wife, a pet owner, and a student! It's very hard to balance everything, but I find that prioritizing and delegating are the two most important things. My family, which includes my dog, comes first. Work and homework is mostly done after everybody goes to sleep. And I get a lot of help from my wonderful husband with taking care of our home.
How did your business enrich your life?
I have always loved teaching; however, I never imagined how rewarding it was going to be to work with children. The other day after a great Kindermusik class, one of the little girls came over to me and gave me the biggest of hugs, and did not want to let go of me. Her mom told me she did not react like that with anybody. That made my whole week! I practice my classes with my son at home, and I witness first hand the benefits of my work. My business has brought me back my confidence; I know I can make a difference, and now I also know how.
What advice would you give to new moms, trying to balance work and motherhood?
Prioritize and delegate. You can do it, you just can not do it all by yourself! Ask for help, and get all the support you need. I think that once you become a mother, it is more important to do something you are passionate about for work, so you still have the physical and mental energy to enjoy your family. Being a mother is the hardest work you will ever do. However, if you can do that, you can do anything else you set your heart out to.
