Photo Credit: IMPDI for 2009 WSOPThe 40th Annual World Series of Poker Main Event finally kicked off on July 3rd after a summer full of 56 preliminary events.  This years Main Event feature four Day 1 starting fields and attracted a field of 6,494 total players.  The field is still large enough that two Day 2's are scheduled for today and tomorrow, with all remaining players combining on July 10th for the official start of Day 3.

The 6,494 players in this years field created a prize pool of over $61 million.  The top 648 finishers will make the money and earn at least $21,365.  Finishing in the top 63 will earn you at least six-figures and making the final table will guarantee you at least one million dollar.  First place in this years WSOP Main Event is a staggering $8,546,435.

After the completion of Day 1 play, Troy Weber of West Terre Haute, Indiana is the overall chip leader with 354,000 in chips.  Former WSOP World Champions still in the field include "Amarillo Slim" Preston, Bobby Baldwin, Berry Johnston, Johnny Chan, Phil Hellmuth, Jim Bechtel, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Carlos Mortensen, Robert Varkonyu, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem.

The WSOP Main Event always seems to attract it's fair share of celebrities as well.  A number of them made it to Day 2 action, including Jennifer Tilly, Brad Garrett, Jason Alexander, Shane Warne (world famous cricket player), Patrick Bruel, Lou Diamond Phillips, Marlon Wayans, Shannon Elizabeth and Los Angeles Lakers point guard Jordan Farmar.
