A new gluten free store has opened to the public in Layton. Gluten Free Foods is located at 1596 North Hill Field Road and specializes in providing high quality products for those with Celiac, Gluten Intolerance and Autism. The store will also offer items for people with other food allergies including a line of products that are casein-free, corn-free, dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, potato-free, organic, soy and vegan.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Many families who are raising children with autism believe that removing gluten from their diets help manage their child's behaviors and have even gone as far as saying that following a gluten free diet will recover children from autism. A claim made by Hollywood's Jenny McCarthy.
"A lifelong gluten diet is only effective treatment for celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects one in 133 people, yet only a small percent of the population is accurately diagnosed with the gastrointestinal condition. It affects everyone from children to the elderly. It is not a fad diet," says store owner, Jennifer Stager. " Gluten free diet is not for every child with autism."
Stager suggests that parents consult a doctor before starting any diet. Stager's husband and daughter both have celiac disease and she opened the store to provide an option for northern Utah. "A gluten free diet can be very overwhelming when you ar first diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I decided northern Utah needed a store dedicated to Gluten Free products."
Gluten Free Foods is offering a cooking demo at the south ogden Macy's store one Tuesday, October 27th at 7pm. To register call 801-392-1842.
