Snow day activities for kids
It's the dead of winter, and schools are closed. Instead of worrying about your to-do list, take this opportunity to create some fun for your kids with these handy-dandy snow day activities:
- Fill a spray bottle with water and food coloring, and decorate your front lawn.
- Give each child a shovel and go to work on the driveway. Their incentive? Hot chocolate with marshmallows.
- Make snow candy.
- Conduct homemade science experiments.
- Close the curtains, dim the lights, and enjoy a movie together. A great opportunity for cuddle time. Don't forget the popcorn!
- Create a scrapbook with pictures from past snow days.
- Build a fort out of blankets and camp "in," complete with s'mores. Here's a good recipe for indoor s'mores.
- Read together.
- Be proactive, and make homemade cards for upcoming birthdays.
- Stage a scavenger hunt.
- Break out the board games.
- Give them washable paint and brushes, and allow them to ignite their creativity on your windows.
- Bake something special together. Then have a tea party, complete with your best cups, saucers, candlelight and cloth napkins.
- Make paper snowflakes and hang them around the house. Get some nifty designs here.
- Go through your child's room with them, and organize their toys. Set aside items to donate.
If you absolutely have to go to work:
- Create a babysitting co-op with neighbors, and take turns watching the kids when schools are closed.
- Call a neighborhood teen to entertain the kids.
- Take your child to work, and show them how you spend your days. Make sure to bring a bag filled with arts and crafts, books and quiet games.
