If you ever wanted to participate in the Olympics and a spelling bee, you can do both at Quimby's on Saturday, February 7th at 7pm. The Intellectual Games event is the third in a month-long bid by Unlympics to raise awareness on the financial and displacement impact of Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid. Fortunately, the games have shifted from outdoor to indoor.
"From Saturday January 24 to February 14 2009, InCUBATE and person-in-residence Anne Elizabeth Moore, on behalf of the Unlympics Organizing Committee, will present on consecutive Saturdays games, silliness, and enjoyable activities in celebration of the idea that diverse notions can come together in the spirit of sharing. These games are sponsored by organizations whose constituencies will be directly impacted by the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid, and will be preceded by concrete information—and not marketing—about the impact the Olympics may have on Chicago."
As of this posting there were 20 spots left for the spelling bee. It costs $5 to spell, but it's free to heckle such early round misspellings from last year's National Spelling Bee, like accordiatura, otachyriasis, or tanneau. I have no idea of the correct spellings or the definitions, and I doubt the folks at Unlympics care so much about spelling as misrepresentation. Since Unlympics is all about fun for a cause, they'll most likely tone down the national spelling bee format to better suit adults. Register here.
