What's your favorite drink?

July 4, 3:59 PM

When a reporter from Forbes called me to ask if I would share my favorite quaff and where I like best to imbibe it, it was a hard call. It was something akin to choosing your favorite child, or as one of the other folks polled said, choosing your favorite sexual position.

Check out this fun little piece of reporting at Forbes Life.com. It takes us through the top drinks of everyone from chefs like Mario Batali to winemakers such as Luisa Ponzi. One of my favorite chefs and characters in the business, the unflappable Anthony Bourdain likes a good Negroni as much as I do.

Many folks had to share their favorite bars in different places. I wouldn't have felt complete had I not told you my tops for San Francisco, New York and Rome: the three cities I call home and drink superbly well in. You'll have to go to the link if you want to find out the details.

Michael Davis, chairman of Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. a Chicago-based auction house and retailer, says Paris' Place des Vosges tops his list. I couldn't agree more, particularly if I could eat that lamb with a great glass of Côtes du Rhônes again at Café Creme, a small restaurant just off the Place des Vosqes that turned one of my best friends into a meat eater. David also like a glass of Champagne, which is always apropos with me.

Deborah Kemp, a sommelier in London, focuses on her Barbarescos, one of my favorite wines in the world. She suggests decanting it. In my Italian-inspired style I would probably decant almost anything that wouldn't be spoiled by the air.

Cheer to you on the long weekend to come. Please enjoy a glass of something special at one of your favorite watering holes,

Liza the Wine Chick

Rediscovering Bourbon

October 13, 5:35 PM
I have always been a rum and a gin girl. The gin I generally prefer mixed but great, small-production rums I have often enjoyed up and on the rocks. So it has always been a mystery to me why I haven't easily embraced Bourbon and Scotch. Although rum... Read More

Reflections from a new cork fan

October 4, 7:40 PM
So I will readily admit that I was transfixed by the all information I learned about cork in Portugal. I had always been fond of cork; it's romantic, historical and has been a pretty darn-good closure for a lot of years. Despite all of this, I did get... Read More

Wine-based cocktails

September 28, 2:14 PM
Yes, that tannic, sometimes fruity profile has been sneaking its way into more cocktails. And I think it's great. Sommeliers and mixologists are both on board and making some great wine-based drinks and that's really exciting. This used to be something... Read More

On the Wine Trail in Arizona (please trust me and read on)

September 26, 6:57 PM
Frankly the idea scared me. The place is a dessert, more suitable for cacti and prickly pear than grapes. I think I had experienced one wine from Arizona before and couldn't tell you what it was.Even my mother, who is not in the wine business but is... Read More

Rose Rising

September 16, 4:59 PM
I have always been a fan of rosés, particularly in the summer. They can have the cool, refreshing profile of a white with the power and complexity of a red. I have always been fond of what I call rowdy rosés, those made from serious, intense... Read More
