While I love some beers, I am not a fan of that light, pale style you often get in ethnic restaurants. I have gotten really into Japanese food recently and have been BYOBing all over town. I wish the bulk of Japanese restaurants had better wine lists, but until that changes here are a couple of great wines to enjoy with raw fish.

A few general guidelines would be to choose wines that are crisp and light in style. Off-dry wines and heavy reds would overwhelm the delicate flavors of the fish. Cool climate whites, those with citric notes and those in the white Rhône style with stone fruits are ideal.
Five great picks:
1) Albariño from Spain is fantastic with fish. Alvarinho and vinho verde from over the border in Portugal are great as well. Read some of my recent coverage of these Portughese wines. The Bodegas Montecillo 2008 "Verdemar" Albariño, priced at $14, is delicious.
2) Torrontés from Argentina is a great pair with its citric notes. Fincas Patagonicas Zolo Torrontés is delicious and priced at $11.
3) Cool-climate Italian whites like Vermentino from Tuscany and Arneis from Piedmont are great. Ponzi in Oregon makes a superb Willamette Valley Arneis priced around $18.99. Antinori's Tenuta Gaudo al Tasso Vermentino is lovely for around $20.
4) Sancerre, Pouilly Fume and Loire Valley whites go with everything, especially fish.
5) White Bordeaux is lovely and steely and perfect with all creatures of the sea, including sushi. The Château Haut Selve 2007, from the Graves, priced at $15, is a current favorite.
