I

I have spent a fair amount of time in Soma town and have stayed in hotels on on the square and small, and large, hotels off the beaten path, but never knew about MacArthur Place. It's somewhat of a hidden gem--with a spa, pool and restaurant--just four big blocks from the Square. And yes we walked in every day for lunch and dinner, and it was great for the digestion.

Some of the rooms have small patios and outdoor showers.

The 64-room property looks deceptively small, but that's part of the fun of the place. It has a western theme, with saddles strewn about the bar, as it's housed in a former Victorian House, which dates to the 1850s. The property was once a ranch. Rooms are big, and comfortable, with wide-screen TV (we watched Casablanca) and fireplaces. What's more fun that taking a shower outside in the hot summer months? What's even better is getting to wash up with fun wine-infused bath products.I am a connoisseur of these and I really like MacArthur's.

The hotel's restaurant is a steakhouse that also pours refreshing summer whites by the glass, like Torrontés and Albarino. Bloody Marys are served in a glass boot, you can't beat that. You can also get room service or a salad by the pool. And they give you lovely outsize wine glasses to enjoy your own drinks in the room or during the nightly wine tasting in the library.

AJ, a Russian Blue and very mellow cat, runs the roost and lazes about reception. Word has it that he will even respond to your emails. The hotel also runs fun specials like the live bands and BBQ every Friday night from 4:30 to 7:30, when $4 drinks and appetizers are featured. They are also running a $24.99 three-course dinner with prime rib.

It seems that smart marketing is helping to attract and keep a local following for the hotel. Food and beverage director David Daniel says 75 percent of his business is local, not an easy feat to achieve in a tourist community.

The spa is also divine and features fun grape seed oil-based treatments such as baths, scrubs and massages. All in all it's a great place to hide away for a weekend (or Monday evening like we did) without needing to put a lot of miles on the car or stress out about where to eat or relax.

Cheers,

Liza the Wine Chick

PS Don't miss the lovely terrace at LaSalette for Portuguese-inspired food, but don't go late or they will rush you out.
