This week, renowned Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro celebrates the launch of his novel, “The Strain”, by discussing the work and signing copies at local Barnes and Noble stores. He and co-author Chuck Hogan will make two appearances on Thursday, June 4:
• At the Park Slope Barnes & Noble in Brooklyn, at midnight.
• At the Union Square Barnes & Noble in Manhattan, at 7:00 PM.
Del Toro, who is known for cinematic tales teeming with whimsical, and, at times, terrifying, supernatural creatures, revisits the time-tested (not to mention lucrative) mythology of the vampire with partner Hogan. Their novel, “The Strain”, is the first installment in a literary trilogy.
About “The Strain”
In a plot point reminiscent of Bram Stoker, “The Strain” recounts events that unfold after a jet liner arriving in New York is found stalled on a runway with almost everyone dead on board. The subsequent involvement of the Centers for Disease Control indicates what will ensue: the spread of a vampire “virus” that threatens to destroy humanity by turning vulnerable humans around the world into the bloodthirsty undead.
About Chuck Hogan
A well-known author of commercial fiction, Chuck Hogan has enjoyed continued success since the release of his first novel, “The Standoff” (1995). According to the author’s official biography on the Simon & Schuster website, this political thriller became a world-wide bestseller and was translated into fourteen languages. He has applied his talent for writing thrillers to the medical arena (“The Blood Artists”, (1998)) and to crime tales (“Prince of Thieves”, (2004),which won the Hammett Prize for crime writing and will be turned into a motion picture by Warner Brothers).
About Guillermo Del Toro
A critically-acclaimed director, producer, and screenwriter, Guillermo Del Toro is known for his bold visuals, unusual mixing of genres, and otherworldly subject matter. He has had tremendous success with blockbusters such as the “Hellboy” films (2004 and 2008) and with his previous foray into the world vampires, “Blade II” (2002). He has also used his innovative approach to storytelling by taking on political history in the horror-inspired, “The Devil’s Backbone” (2001) and in the fantastical “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), a bold and original film set during the Fascist regime in 1944 Spain. The film tells the story of a young bookworm who escapes the sadness, danger, and violence of her personal circumstances by entering into a wondrous but frightening fantasy world. It was nominated for and won numerous awards around the world, even garnering a Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination and winning three of the golden statuettes for Best Achievement in Art Direction, Cinematography, and Makeup. He has numerous literary adaptations in development for the big screen, including the much-anticipated “Hobbit” films. “The Strain” marks his literary debut.
