The Brave New World Repertory Theatre and The Waterfront Museum have combined forces to offer staged readings of Budd Schulberg’s memorable play, “On the Waterfront”. The Waterfront Museum Barge, which is normally docked in Brooklyn, will sail up the Hudson River and provide the atmospheric venue for the readings. The remaining scheduled performances will take place:
• Tonight, Friday, May 22, at Hudson River Park in Manhattan (PIER 84 at 44th St).
• Next Friday, May 29, at New Jersey Transit’s Erie Lackawanna Plaza and Rail/Ferry/Path Terminal in Hoboken. (Those familiar with the material will know that the action of the play takes place in this area.)
Tickets are $18 and include complimentary wine and cheese, which will be offered beginning at 7:30 PM. The readings begin at 8:00 PM. You can purchase tickets on Brave New World’s website at: http://bravenewworldrep.org/. (Previous, Brooklyn performances of “On the Waterfront” were sold out.)
About Brave New World
The Brave New World Repertory Theatre company is committed to producing classic, original, and neglected works, and to providing Brooklyn-based theater artists with the opportunity to work in their own community. They are known for their unique, site-specific productions, and “On the Waterfront” is the latest of these. Upcoming productions include garden readings of Carson McCullers’ “The Member of the Wedding”, and a staging of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” on the beach and boardwalk at Coney Island.
About The Waterfront Museum Barge
The Waterfront Museum is housed aboard a barge that is normally docked in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. The barge was built in 1914 and was rescued and restored by the Hudson Waterfront Museum for the purposes of educating the public about the history of barges in commerce and entertainment, as well as of providing an entry point to the New York waterways. When it is not being used for special events, the barge is docked at Pier 44 in Brooklyn and is open to visitors on Thursdays 4-8 PM and Saturdays 1-5 PM. Admission is free, but donations are requested.
