"Kill the Revs out there," Khano Smith told Shalrie Joseph of his transfer to Seattle. "I'm gonna bite the hand that used to feed me. Bite it off. You know what Seattle gave me to make me change my mind about going out there? XBox 360. That's all it took. Gotta buy my own controller. I'm a simple man, people."
Last night, Khano came a little closer to the team that pushed his little boat into the duck pond or rather, Seattle Sound(ers), the team that bounced him right back cross country to New York Red Bulls.
Thursday night, Khano launched the first goal of the Red Bulls 2-0 victory in their preseason skirmish with Crystal Palace Baltimore from a combination play with Juan Pablo Angel. Matthew Mbuta followed with the second strike in the second half.
"My most vivid memories of Khano are from watching Revs games on Direct Kick and literally seeing him wiff at the ball when he tried to kick it," said Red Bulls Examiner Jeff Kassouf. "I recall shots that might have found their way to the second level of Gillette. But now, Khano Smith has solidified himself in preseason as the man who will man the left flank, stepping into a role previously filled by Dave van den Bergh, arguably the heart of the the Red Bull's attack last year."
"These games can become a banana skin," said coach Juan Carlos Osorio, "you need to have a professional performance."
Khano had an abrupt transition from the red-hot Seattle Sounders to the perennial East Coast misfits, but somewhere in the translation he went from a $46,305 salary at the Revs to $120,000 at NY. That's more than Kheli Dube, Jeff Larentowicz, and Wells Thompson make put together. A goodbye present? A harbinger of things to come? An accounting error?
On March 28, the Revolution pile on a bus and go visit Khano Smith. Think there will be fireworks? Remember this?
Khano Smith . . . . the memories. Go at it.
