Tuesday night, New England Revolution lost 2-1 in overtime to USL-2 Harrisburg CIty Islanders and crashed out of the Open Cup tournament in their first round.
Jeff Larentowicz scored the first goal in the 38th minute.
The second half was delayed because of thunderstorms which contributed to the slick conditions and tension of the game. Coach Steve Nicol made three rare substitutions at the half, which proved to be the undoing of the stretched team.
Costa RIcan national Gabriel Badilla made his first appearance after an eight month hiatus for back surgery and replaced Darrius Barnes. Pat Phelan and Sainey Nyassi subbed in, respectively for Larentowicz and Kenny Mansally to save their legs for the match at the La Galaxy July 4.
In the 67th minute, Mo Odur evened it up for Harrisburg, and Geoff Bloes scored the game winner in the 105th minute of overtime.
Revolution finish with eight players on the field
The game became physical and Kheli Dube and Mike Videira were injured and left the field in the 63rd and 81st minutes, forcing the Revoution to play with 10, then nine players going into overtime. Nico Colaluca received his second caution and was ejected in the 117th minute reducing the squad to eight players.
The Revolution entered the Open Cup tournament just after advancing to the semi-finals of the SuperLiga tournament with many starters benched with injuries.
Today the team announced the signing of 6'4 Lithuanian veteran Edgaras Jankauskas.
Revolution #1 in MLS Fair Play Table
Despite the adversity, the Revolution are #1 in the MLS Fair Play Table with 140 points, followed by Toronto FC with 150.5. Chivas USA drags at the bottom with 282 points.
