Our hometown heros Alligator Records have scored a hit with the addition of Tommy Castro to their stable. His recent “Hard Believer” cd shot to top end of Billboard’s charts upon release. In the mid-1990s The Tommy Castro Band served as the house band for three seasons on NBC Television’s Comedy Showcase (airing right after Saturday Night Live), bringing him in front of millions of viewers every week. I’m pretty sure he has been a featured performer on the Blues Cruise (one of these days, I’m going). Well Tommy Castro is coming to our fair city for two nights. He will appear in Evanston at SPACE on Friday and then the venerable Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn on Saturday. This give you two shots at hearing the 2008 Blues Music Awards Entertainer of the Year. If you are a Windy City Blues Society member (as is your truly), you get a $5 discount at the door. Do that four times and you already recouped your dues.

XM Radio’s Blues channel 74 host Bill Wax tells us that Ann Rabson (formerly of Saffire the Uppity Blues Woman) will be gracing the stage of Old Town School of Folk Music on Sunday, September 27th.
By now most of you know that Buddy Guy’s Legends has finally announced its new location (mid 2010?). It will be just one block North. More importantly, that is still the South Side. Buddy is trying to keep the blues in the South loop.
Some “outta da way” blues you may not be aware of this Friday include Guy King at Andy’s Jazz Club (don’t let the J word deter you). Guy King, a current Blues Blast Award Nominee will also be at that J venue Satuday night. Marty Sammon and Doug McDonald will play Friday at Vino Tinto in Oak Lawn.
Saturday’s outtadaway gigs might include Joe Filisko & Eric Noden at Bill’s Blues in Evanston or Mr. G & the Mystery Band at Harlem Avenue Lounge.
Be sure to check the Chicago Blues Beat Calendar for complete listings including showtimes and maps.
Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. I would hate to lose blues fans through stupidity.
Peace.
