Status update for Santa Fe and Canada

July 11, 12:08 AM

Fernando Jones
As I write this I am listening to Hambone’s Blues Party on WDCB 90.9 FM. He mentions a news clip from Santa Fe describing the state of blues in Chicago. Earlier today my Chicago Examiner editor referred me to a similar article in The Canadian Press. I wish these journalists would hook up with me for a weekend. When people insist the blues is dead, I must ask “Compared to what?” They tore down some of the old juke joints, and they also tore down Comiskey Park. The White Sox are in first place. Chicago Blues is in first place as well. Is it the same as it was in the 60’s? Is anything? There are always the arguments about the good old days. For some perspective ask a thirty something hip-hop fan about the death of old school.

Well there is no time to argue about the death of Chicago Blues, because ironically we have too much Chicago Blues to report on. Chicago Blues Beat’s calendar lists over twenty venues today (Friday) alone. You can be sure there are many more unlisted venues. Both Friday and Saturday also feature family gigs. Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings will be on Navy Pier. Saturday at the Congress Theater, Fernando Jones has a daytime start. Jones’ www.BluesKids.com features a family program for blues education. Even if you don’t make the show, please check out the website. On top of all of this, you have the various fests in the Chicago area that usually feature at least one blues act.

Nigel MackAt this very moment, I’m hearing Hambone feature songs by Nigel Mack & The Blues Attack. Nigel is a Canadian bluesman who now makes his home in the Windy City. I don’t travel much, so maybe the blues is in critical condition in Santa Fe or Canada, but it is very alive here in Chicago. Make your plans now to hear some very alive Chicago Blues.

Goodbye Chico Banks

December 4, 11:34 AM
I have been blessed to document the exciting resurgence of live blues music in Chicago.  The new generation, with the likes of Toronzo Cannon, Mike Wheeler, Big Ray, Bernard Allison and the Baker-Brooks brothers are stars in their own right and... Read More

Let's overdo it again this Thanksgiving.

November 28, 4:11 PM
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I once again predict some over indulgence. I started on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving with a stop at Vino Tinto in Oak Lawn. When Marty Sammon has a few days off his gig as Buddy Guy’s keyboard wizard,... Read More

The Patron Saint of Musicians

November 20, 10:25 PM
If I wasn't fortunate enough to live here in Chicago, I would have to make the trip here this weekend for a most excellent selection of live blues music.  Some acts not always on our local radar include Kenny Neal and his swamp blues at Buddy Guy's... Read More

The winner is...the fan.

November 19, 10:23 PM
I finally got to attend an award ceremony that was meaningful to me.  I suppose Hollywood should dole out its awards on the West coast.  Broadway has its awards, I assume, on the East coast.  Now where would we hold a Blues music award... Read More

Jimmy Burns Band at The Harlem Avenue Lounge

October 25, 3:26 PM
The Jimmy Burns Band that appeared recently at The Harlem Avenue Lounge was the same band featured on his 2007 live cd/DVD.  Delmark recording stalwarts E.G. McDaniel, James Carter and Tony Palmer bring out the best in Mr. Jimmy Burns.  I was... Read More

The Cash Box Kings return to Buddy Guy's Legends

I looked up from my plow and I can't believe it's Friday already.  As usual we have a lot of great blues in line for the weekend.  Fitzgeralds in Berwyn presents the great Lonnie Brooks tonight (Friday).  My personal pick for Saturday... Read More

Blues in the burbs

October 10, 11:07 AM
Weekend blues in Chicago often start at nine or even ten at night.  This gives you time for a nap after work.  Today, I'm going to point out some out-of-the-way blues gigs to consider.  In the Southwest suburb of Worth, there is a bar... Read More

The best blues bar in Chicagoland

October 1, 11:45 AM
Over the years of covering live blues music in and around Chicago, I have seen many venues come and go.  It seems to me that the openings have not kept pace with the closings.  Even with that attrition, the Chicago land area still has many... Read More
