Marion Barry, disgraced former Washington, D.C. mayor and foe to the city's move to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages, was arrested last night on charges of stalking a woman.

Barry, who is now a city councilman, was arrested after a woman flagged down a U.S. Park Police officer to report that a man in a vehicle nearby was stalking her, according to The Washington Post.  The woman told the officer that Barry was "bothering her", and he was charged with one misdemeanor count of stalking.  Barry was released and is expected to appear in court later this week.

Referring to the D.C. City Council's move to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages, Barry said,

"All hell is going to break lose. We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this. … What you've got to understand is 98 percent of my constituents are black and we don't have but a handful of openly gay residents. Secondly, at least 70 percent of those who express themselves to me about this are opposed to anything dealing with this issue. The ministers think it is a sin, and I have to be sensitive to that."

When Barry was D.C. mayor, he was busted by undercover officers in a crack cocaine sting in 1990.  He served 6 months in federal prison, but was reelected mayor in 1994, serving from 1995 to 1999.  He has served as a city councilman for the past 10 years.
