Michelle Obama, Maria Shriver and governor in San Francisco today to tout volunteerism
First lady Michelle Obama will visit San Francisco today to tout community service, according to several published reports.
Obama will give the keynote address to the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service at the Moscone Center. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also scheduled to speak at the event. More than 4,500 hundred people are expected to attend.
Obama is also appearing at a San Francisco Elementary School with California first lady Maria Shriver, all in an effort to launch President Barack Obama’s push for service as a method of aiding the nation’s economic recovery. Shriver and Obama will tour the Bret Harte Elementary School playground, billed as “the first fully volunteer-built intergenerational playground in the nation.”
The appearances also launch the United We Serve campaign, led by the government-run Corporation for National and Community Service.
The exact time of Obama’s arrival to San Francisco has not been released, but it is expected in the afternoon.
Obama's San Francisco visit is the first of several events of events across the country in which Cabinet members will highlight volunteer projects.
