
The cherry blossoms have arrived! The yearly festival celebrates Tokyo’s gift to the city of 3,020 cherry trees in 1912. With blooms sprouting up on every corner of the city, and the weather getting warmer by the day, its time to take advantage of a few things that the National Cherry Blossom Festival has to offer! Take a look at some of this year’s events which range from a little pricey, but worth the cost, to free of charge!
To make the most out of your morning and have a date with some fun in the sun, rent a paddle boat at the Tidal Basin Paddle Boat House, located at 1501 Maine Ave, SW. From March 15 to April 12th, a two person boat is just $8.00 an hour. Paddle along the water in the morning hours and enjoy the cherry blossom trees along the waters edge. Afterwards, head to Café MoZU in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, just a few steps from the boat house. To secure a paddle boat for the time and day of your preference, reservations can be made ahead of time online.
For a night of romance, board the Odyssey on April 9th and cruise the Potomac River in style. Tickets are $125 a person which includes a four-course dinner, live entertainment and dancing in the glass atrium dining rooms with monumental views of nation’s capital at night. Passengers will be boarding at the Gangplank Marina, located at 6th & Water streets, SW. Parking is available and the location is also metro accessible. Ladies and gentleman, cocktail attire is required.
Finally, on April 11th, beginning at 8:30pm, snag a seat at your favorite outdoor location and bring a bottle of wine to watch the festival’s fireworks show. The fireworks will be launched from the South West waterfront for about 30 minutes. Rain or shine, this will be a site to see!
