Ryan Newman finished 22nd this afternoon in the Price Chopper 400 at the Kansas Speedway. Most Cup drivers consider running in the top twenty of forty-three cars a good day, but when the Sprint Cup Championship is on the line as it is for the Chase contenders, any result outside the top twenty has to be considered a rough day. To further drive the point home, the top seven finishers for today's race were occupied by seven Chase contenders and only one other contender finished behind Newman. The #39 U.S. Army team from Stewart-Hass Racing fell 54 points further behind the Championship leader, while teammate Tony Stewart gained ground with his fourth win of the season.
Newman's 22nd place finish today continued one streak and ended another. Leading up to the Price Chopper 400, Newman had finished in the top fifteen for the previous six races. While that streak has come to an end, Newman's streak of finishing outside the top fifteen at Kansas is going strong. He has not finished better than 16th going back to 2003 when he picked up a win there.
While he struggled all day against his competitors in the Chase, his day is not over yet. Since the 6th Annual Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Nationals were postponed due to rain last night, Newman will jet
from Kansas to Iowa to compete at Knoxville Speedway. Tony Stewart was also expected to run in the Nationals tonight, so it will be interesting to see if he makes it out of victory lane on time.
