Be part of educating the public about breast cancer at UCSF. Apply to be be a volunteer advocate at the UCSF breast oncology program. Details are as follows from Sarah Goins, the volunteer contact for the program:

What we are looking for:
• Volunteers with an interest in breast cancer research who would like to be an advocate for translational research with the UCSF Breast SPORE Advocacy Core (BSAC).

SPORE and how the Advocates help advance its goals:
• As a Specialized Program of Research Excellence grant funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the SPORE promotes translational research: moving basic research findings from the laboratory to clinical settings, and clinical findings to the laboratory environment. The result of a research advocacy initiative, BSAC was one of the first research advocacy programs formally connected to the National Cancer Institute. The Core is currently composed of 10 volunteer team members, who interface between the SPORE investigators and the community.

What activities do SPORE Advocates participate in?
BSAC advocates:
• Contribute to projects and forums addressing current and emerging challenges facing the cancer research community.
• Meet and work with SPORE investigators on research projects and protocols.
• Are interested in clinical trials and current research trends and issues.
• Organize and participate in workshops led by Advocates, including:
o Understanding Medical Journals Workshop, Sept. 19, 2009
o Bay Area Disparities Coalition Town Hall Meeting, Oct. 2, 2009
• Attend research seminars led by investigators from UCSF and other institutions.
• Provide community education on the importance of participating in clinical trials and tissue research.
• Help develop new ideas for projects or assist in leading existing projects.

Note: time commitment depends on activity involvement.

What we would like to know about you:
