Banquet room at Oak Ridge Winery

All dressed up and nowhere to go. That was my plight last night, as a casual evening of food and wine exploration was foiled by my partner-in-crime's extended house-hunting foray. Oh, well; at least my feet were happy, as I kicked off the much-too-high girly heels for a cozy pair of slipper-sox.

I had hosted a blind tasting at my house a couple weeks prior.  A lone, unopened bottle was left behind that evening, an '04 3 Girls Cabernet, from Oak Ridge Winery, in Lodi.   Looked like someone gave up when the cork headed south instead of north----you know, when the 'ah-so'  maneuver becomes an 'oh-no' moment, and instead of freeing the cork, pushes it further into the bottle?  Well, I discovered this the morning after, and popped a second cork into the neck to seal any air seepage, and hoped for the best.

So, with a Sunday evening lying before me, and my palate geared up for some vino, thought it might be a good time to give the 3 Girls a whirl.  The ex was on his way to pick up da kid after a day of painting, so I asked him in for a glass or two.  I removed cork #2 that I had popped in, and carefully 'screwed' cork #1, which came out with a loud pop!  Good sign; sounded like the seal hadn't been compromised.

Beautiful deep ruby color, tinged with purple.  I got  blackberries and vanilla on the nose.  Mouth-filling,  ripe, dark fruit,  full bodied, jammy,  with very smooth tannins . Yummy.  Not an overly complex wine,  it was very easy drinking ---too easy?  The empty bottle lay before us before we knew it.

This would've been a fun one to try to guess at the blind tasting, as it didn't possess the typical cabernet flavor profile or the bold tannins usually associated with the varietal.  In the blind, I probably would've guessed Merlot.

I was unable to locate the '04 (check with the winery), but the '05 should be available on the shelves of the local Bel Air and SaveMart food stores, as well as David Berkley and Corti Bros, for about $17/btl retail. I don't know how the '05 compares with the '04, but as usual, I'm always more than  willing to be the sacrificial lamb, in the name of wine research.    If any of ya'll beat me to it, let me know what you think!
