Facebook is fast becoming the leading social network for internet users.  A great way to connect with old friends and family.  In my case also a great way to connect with our TV viewing public in Southern California.   At KNBC - I have been using the old Facebook now for 3 years - signing up at first to connect with fellow Meteorology students at Mississippi State.

Only recently did I figure out that this could also be a important tool in helping us keep the public better informed during times of severe weather.  Recently we built a new facebook page at the station called "Knbc Weekends Unplugged".  We decided to create a page for fans only.   A site where you would get a behind the scenes look at the news, weather and sports of the day.  But more importantly a chance for you to participate in our weather coverage here in Southern California.

How do we plan to make the site different?.  By asking you to participate for one.  In the old days of TV weather, most Meteorologist had a group of weather spotters who would phone-in information each day including the high and low for the day and any rain totals.  But that seems so old school now. Beside the phones in Studio 10 here in Burbank are set not to ring during the show.

We will have the facebook page up and running during weekend newscast which will give you the ability to chat with us live. .  More importantly during severe weather this will allow me to find out live from the public what the weather is like in a particular neighborhood.  Our Titan HD Radar is certainly a great tool for observing severe weather.  But often even the radar has issues.  This way with your help we can better cover the local viewing area. Simply come on the page live during our 6 & 11pm weekend news and chat away or post your weather data for the day or on our wall and we will mention it on the air.

We also love weather pictures and videos!.  Just snap or shoot away during a storm,  a rainbow or any other weather event.  Send it off to us on the old facebook in digital format and we will share your photographic skills on the air. Got a news tip or sports score?.  We want that too.  Just post it to our wall. Recently we did a great story on a 88-year old local college graduate.  Guess where we got the story idea from?.

We will also be posting cool videos and pictures from us as well. Stuff you wont see on the nightly news.  How about a behind the scenes look at how we do the weather in front of the famous green screen?.  It is up and running now for your viewing pleasure.  We will also host surveys and discussions on local weather, past and present.  Post our favorite news and sports stories too.

Want to hear your city mentioned on the air during the live broadcast?.  Simple enough.  Just sign up to become friends of our new facebook site.  Log in during the show and mention your town, temperature and any interesting weather for the day and we will give a shout out.  Simple enough?. If you do, please send me a message and let me know your a examiner.com fan.

A word of warning, .  Facebook and our site (Knbc Weekends Uplugged) can become very addicting!.
