Focus on the Family announced today that Dr. James Dobson is leaving the Focus on the Family broadcast. While activists are gleefully applauding the "mutual decision" by Dobson and the board many evangelicals are saddened by the Radio Hall of Fame Broadcaster's decision. Family activists and advocates are also poorer today without the daily voice of prophetic reasoning, prudent reporting of issues that are in the news that assault traditional family values, and sound parenting advice that bolsters good parenting throughout the world. While Dr. Dobson will not be leaving until February, it is apparent that he will still be speaking out against issues like gay marriage, abortion, and other key issues that have been passed through by rouge judges and liberal politicians in the last few decades. Dobson is sure to still appear on Fox News, Larry King Live among others to defend family values.
Started in a storefront
Dr. James C. Dobson was a successful psychologist and best selling author when he left his job to start Focus on the Family in 1977. He started the organization with an advance from a publisher and the radio show was one of the first foundational pieces of being an advocate for marriage and family. The organization grew, and even so Dobson never took a salary. He was on the front lines of protecting and defending Biblical values and it appears that though Dobson won't back away from the fray, many at Focus may be poised to quiet down the political rhetoric. It is unclear who will take over the broadcast after Dr. Dobson leaves but it is sure to leave a void in the potent and powerful impact that Focus on the Family has maintained for decades.
