Friday night I made my way from Los Angeles to San Diego to check out a singer/songwriter named Jenny Owen Youngs. The warmth of the Summer day lingered in the air as a group of fans made their way into Lestat's Coffee shop. I looked around as a very hot group fanned themselves and sat quietly waiting for Jenny and William Fitzsimmons to start their first of two back to back shows for the evening.
This was my first time to hear Jenny so I had no idea what to expect. She came out on stage to a quiet group and picked up her guitar. She pointed out the obvious vibe in the room and made conversation about the heat. At this point, this seemed to have been the only thing on anyones mind. But as soon as Jenny started her first song, the thoughts of weather soon vanished and her beautiful vocals captivated the room.
My first thoughts on Jenny's music were that I loved the unique sound of her voice (a sound comparison to Feist came to mind). Her set was very diverse and I was amazed at how you couldn't quite place her in only one genre of music. She went from mellow folk songs where chords were gently picked and vocals almost whispered, to alternative songs belted out, that left you excited to hear her also backed by a full band.
When I got home that night, I downloaded her latest album "Transmitter Failure." This album does a great job at displaying her eclectic sound. Songs like "Here is a heart" leave a melody in your head that will stay with you long after it's over. Backed by strings, ukuleles and a large variety of instrumentation, Jenny is sure to provide a song to match any mood you're in.
Be sure to check out her music and catch her while she's on tour.
