If you’re like me – a parent on a budget – you’re looking for a great deal. At an early age, I learned from my mother that there is always a way to save an additional 10% on major purchases, a 50% off rack in every clothing store, and always a coupon for lunch or dinner. When I was a kid, we ate meals out more than any other family I knew. Of course it helped that I am an only child, but even more economically sound was the fact that Mom had the buy-one-get-one-free coupon in her purse. The downside to this (There’s a downside? you ask) is that sometimes we ended up eating somewhere that was not my first choice.
“Let’s go to out for pizza tonight!” I would request, excitedly.
“Well, we have to go to Freddie’s Fish Market. That’s the coupon I have,” Mom would respond. “You can get the Fishboat with coleslaw and hush puppies.”
“But, I HATE coleslaw,” I would protest.
“I can cook and we can stay home,” Mom would say.
“OK. I’ll order the Fishboat.”
That was then, this is now. That was a coupon, this is GROUPON. What is Groupon? you ask. Groupon, as the website touts, is “collective buying power”. According to the site, here’s how it works:
To give you an idea of what constitutes a cool deal at a great price, in the last several days since I joined, there have been Groupons for 63% off rock climbing classes, 50% off facials, waxing and haircuts, 60% off tanning, and 56% off at The Porter Beer Bar (the deal that made me “get my Groupon”). All deals are local in the Atlanta area and all feature third-party reviews of the activity, service, or establishment, so you can make an educated decision before making your purchase.
Check it out. I’m getting my $35 Groupon for food and beer for only $15. I can’t wait to try the gourmet pub food and sample some of their 200 beers, knowing I already saved twenty bucks! (And, I’m willing to bet they don’t serve anything remotely close to a Fishboat.)
