My sister and I were discussing round toe pumps last weekend on one of our many shopping trips (during which we ironically spend the majority of our time eating). She told me about the latest pair she purchased which were oh so cute, but made her toes scream in pain.
“Why is it,” she shrieked, “that round toe pumps hurt the most? Oh I know! It has to be the way your toes scrunch up in the shoe. You should write and article on that!”
So writing I am dear sister, to answer your question. “Scrunch up” may be my sister’s technical term, but the actual cause of pain from round toe shoes derives from a condition called Morton’s Neuroma. Morton’s Neuroma is a pinched or swollen nerve in the foot. The injured nerve is usually between the third and fourth toe, but other neurmoas can occur in other toes as well. 90% of cases reported are from women who love to strut their stuff in high heels with narrow toe boxes. For most, it feels like a cramped toe, burning sensation, or for others… a “scrunch up.”
It may seem odd to you, but round toe shoes are narrower and leave less room for your feet than pointy toe shoes. Be careful when donning the latest fashion; walking around for eight hours in Jessica Simpson pumps is considered an aggravating activity to the foot.
