The Star Tribune report this morning on the truck driver who was killed after anhydrous ammonia was accidentally released made for disturbing reading. http://www.startribune.com/local/south/70245812.html?elr=KArksUUUU
The accident happened Monday night in Rosemount’s industrial area at CF Industries. Only a small amount of the product was released before being shut down by a plant employee. Nevertheless, according to the article, that small amount was enough to kill one truck driver, injure another, and required a Rosemount police officer and a Dakota County sheriff’s deputy to be taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for further check ups.
Aside from the tragic death of the truck driver, it was also disturbing to read that 9 drivers were killed last year handling similarly hazardous materials in Minnesota. Anhydrous ammonia is a particularly nasty chemical and according to this University of Minnesota article www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/cropsystems/DC2326.html extreme caution must be used in its storage, application, handling and transportation. The product is commonly used in fertilization.
The accident in question is still under investigation to determine the exact cause and the spill occurred well away from houses and the general public. The fact that such chemicals are regularly in transit on our roads begs questions over the safety of chemical transportation and whether regular road users take extra caution around such vehicles.
