In 1692 there were a series of hearings followed by county court trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft. Although the “Salem Witch Trials” are most commonly known there were a series of hearings conducted through out various towns in the province. Neighboring Ipswich, Andover as well as Salem town árrested over 150 people for the crime of witchcraft and 29 were convicted. Some were hung and some were crushed by heavy boulders. Over the centuries the accusations, trials and executions have captured our imaginations. The stories have been embellished and brought to life and is especially conjured during this haunting holiday of Halloween.
Salem’s most visited museum is the Salem Witch Museum. Take a journey back in time and relive the horrors the local townsman were put through. Learn about the plague of superstition and fear that dictated irreversible terrors and destruction.
To visit Salem today is like turning back the hands of time. The town looks much as it did back when the ghastly trials took place. There are memorials that have been erected since the trials to exonerate the innocent men and woman who died. But the town is all but ghostly. This New England town has a personality all of its own. Halloween is a month long celebration starting October 1 to November 1 the locals love their festivities and go out of their way to make sure visitors and locals alike have a ghoulish time. But the city has a lot to offer and can be enjoyed any time of the year.
Meander down the cobblestone streets through Salem’s oldest cemetary and enjoy fine seafood cuisine, sample your favorite brews at the brew house and shop for your witchy relics. Visit one of the scariest haunted houses known as Dracula’s Castle. Your eyes will not believe what it is seeing at the Wax Museum depicting scenes from the trials themselves.
