Pre-Screening Hair Styling at Edwards Grand Palace
Pre-Screening Hair Styling Fun at Edwards Grand Palace

As part of the fun of an advance screening this past Sunday of the new animated adventure Astro Boy, Houston kids enjoyed a little celebratory coiffure!

Orignally of the iconic Japanese manga and anime series and well received abroad, Astro Boy is finally arriving in North America, and early reports indicate he'll be just as popular here.

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named TENMA. Powered by positive "blue" energy, Astro Boy is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly. Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance, Astro Boy encounters many other colorful characters along the way. (Summit Entertainment)

If anyone still thinks animation is only for children, this first Astro Boy film will happily disabuse them."  (Read the full article

Word around IMDB is that the kiddos are enjoying it, and here's how the reviews are shaping up over at Metacritic:

Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter
"Derivative bits aside, the pint-sized Japanese icon takes flight in vibrant CG animation -- no 3D glasses required." (Read the full review)

 Andrew Barker, Variety
"Appropriately for a film about robots, efficiency is the primary virtue of Astro Boy, a well-oiled CG-animated superhero pic that makes up in competence and vitality what it lacks in originality." (Read the full review)

Nick Schager, Time Out New York
"What’s ultimately more impressive than the vigorous madcap action and innocuous humor, however, is Bowers’s willingness to address adult themes--alienation, regret, class tensions--with a directness that shows a surprising respect for his target young-adult audience." (Read the full review)
