The event of a lifetime, Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT, hit theaters nationwide for two weeks. The anticipation was not as big as I expected for the first showing at Marley Station in Glen Burnie. At the 12:15 pm feature, there were only about 15 people with only one person dressed up as Michael. The attendant handed everyone a lanyard with a laminated 'This Is It' logo pass that was very cool for a keepsake.
The show started with the auditioners from all over the world who were selected for the 50 sold out concert tour expressing their pure joy of being selected. One lucky dancer said, 'Life is hard, but you have to believe in something and THIS IS IT'.
When the music for 'Wanna Be Starting Something' came on, chills went down my spine and the hairs on my arm stood straight up. A plastered smile was across my face as MJ did his signature fancy foot moves and that amazing swivel of his head and neck. There was a green screen that was making magic on the stage come alive during a Humphrey Bogart shoot-out scene to the incredible 'Smooth Criminal'.
During the re-creation of 'Thriller', Michael sits behind the camera while sucking on a lollipop and critiquing the zombies on how to look into the camera and how to use their hands. He looked just like a kid in a candy store. 'Beat It' had the famous fight scene, but what really captured my attention was the solo guitarist, Orianthi, who literally took my breath away with every stroke of her electric guitar. Michael touched on his other classic songs, but he ended with a message that our planet is sick with a fever and it is up to 'us' to fix it with LOVE.
Christian, a life-long fan of Michael Jackson, who came dressed in the classic one-glove, glitter socks and black hat, had this to say, "THIS IS IT was spectacular, it is the best show he has ever done. May his music live on forever!"
That is how you felt leaving the theater as his music will always live on forever. Overall, this was a very uplifting and inspiring production to say the least. Michael Jackson is and always will be the 'King of Pop'.
