Rapids remain in 7th place in the Examiner's Power Rankings
The Rapids held onto the 7th place spot for this weeks power rankings.
The loss to Chicago did not seem to hurt the perception of the Rapids too much. Chicago's a good team, and many people reckon that they would beat the Rapids on most days. On a day that the Rapids were missing Omar Cummings and Colin Clark, not to mention having a off form Conor Casey returning from a long trip, many outside observers are far more forgiving of the loss than Rapids fans have been.
Still the fall from third placed in the rankings, just a few weeks prior, is fairly precipitous. Missing players or not the Rapids should be able to use the home field advantage to better effect.
My ballot:
I reverted to gut impressions this week, rather than relying on my usual focus on per-game points. Turns out I picked them all right if you count the ties as going to the runner.
- Houston (1) - Who is the most important player on the Dynamo? All of them.
- Seattle (2) - No one took advantage of the bye week to drop them from their perch.
- Chivas (3) - Same as Seattle the bye week didn't hurt them, and nobody made a case for taking their spot in the rankings.
- Chicago (5) - Ruined Colorado's 4th of July party.
- D.C. United (6) - D.C. fans like to think of their team as the style winner of the league, but it's the teams heart that's been getting points in spite of the long injury list.
- Columbus Crew (7) - How far up the rankings can Schelotto carry the Crew?
- Colorado Rapids (4) - Colorado's offense has been masking a mediocre defense. With the team having to rely on second stringers in offense the defensive holes have been too much to bear.
- L.A. Galaxy (12) - With Donovan coming back the Galaxy may be poised to go on a run.
- Kansas City Wizards (8) -
- Toronto F.C. (9) - Didn't play this week and no one below them demonstrated that they should move up.
- Real Salt Lake (11) - Real really should beat San Jose at Rio Tinto.
- New England Revolution (10) - Was Saturday's lineup (sans Joseph, Twellman, and Ralston) a snapshot of the future of the Revolution.
- F.C. Dallas (13) - Maybe Dallas is going to start having a run of good results. It's hard to tell though as playing the Red Bulls doesn't provide proof.
- San Jose Earthquakes (14) - A tie in Salt Lake ain't bad for the Earthquakes.
- New York Red Bulls (15) - The Red Bulls are so stinky that the smell has drifted all the way to Austria where the executives are looking around asking, "Who dealt it?"
