The Rapids will be happy to have Conor Casey back after the conclusion of the Confederation's Cup. But, just as Casey is coming back into the team Colin Clark will be leaving.
Clark has been named to the 23 man roster of the U.S. Gold Cup team. The Gold Cup is the regional championship for the Confederation of North, Central American, and Carribean Association Football. (Association Football is better known as soccer.)
Making the Gold Cup squad is a bit of well deserved recognition for the Rapids midfielder. Competing with him for the starting left midfield spot will be Robbie Rogers of the Chicago Fire. Rogers probably has the inside track to start as he has represented the US at the youth level and at the Olympics.
Missing from the Gold Cup squad is Pablo Mastroeni. For the Rapids this is good news as the team will need its captain for the month of July. No slight to Pablo, the Gold Cup is made up of young players long on potential but short on experience.
With two international tournaments to play this summer the USSF needed to prioritize the competitions. The Gold Cup was given the lower priority. The tournament will be a chance for the coaches to give exposure some young up-and-coming players like Colin Clark who's future with the national team lies somewhere after the 2010 World Cup.
The Next Announcements
The Rapids are lucky to be losing only one of their U.S. players, but more announcements will follow. It is expected that one of those announcements will be that Omar Cummings has been called up to represent Jamaica.
Casey's return to the Rapids could not come at a better time.
