Bikers and scooterists: a study in cross-cultural relations
There's a commonly-held belief in the two-wheeled world that bikers and scooterists don't get along. And while there is a storied history of conflict among the more outspoken aspects of these two groups, I have to say that my experience has been quite the opposite.
My old bike (pictured right) often could be found in these situations, tucked among 1000 cc monsters, dropped, chromed choppers and matte-black cafe racers. And according to this
Tampa Bay Online article, genial relations between the chain-driven and belt-driven factions are at an all-time high.
Being that scooterists and motorcyclists both have to go through the same training and licensing procedures, that many of us are tinkerers at heart, there is really no reason we can't all just get along.
Quadrophenia was a long time ago... mods and rockers can live in relative harmony these days.
When I ride, I often get the "
low wave" from bikers. I go on rides with my friend Rip and his positively
Batman-esque BMW.
(By the by, he's asked me to ride the Bajaj more times than I can count.)
Many of my scooter friends have motorcycles, and as I've seen in my time at Sportique, many bikers have made the first tentative steps into scooterdom either by curiosity or economic necessity.
Just don't ask me when I'm going to
get a "real" bike. That's where I draw the line.
