The words don't even make sense next to each other: scooters are popular on the University of Iowa campus this fall. As a graduate of Coe College in nearby Cedar Rapids, I have to say they must be breeding a tougher strain of college students these days if they're zipping around Iowa City in November on mopeds.
But as a rule, college towns are ideal for scooter life: mid-sized, with bustling downtowns and plenty of surface streets where both cars and scooters cruise at around 30 mph. So it's no surprise that college kids would be interested in this relatively cheap mode of transport. And the crowds of parked scoots across from the Auraria campus are testimony to the fact that students and scooters go together like beer and pizza.
Perhaps it will only be a matter of time before campuses nationwide begin implementing policies of parking and traffic regulation to make collegiate scooterists even more at home.
