In about an hour, the last day of hearings in the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor will begin. While the hearings started out raising questions about Sotomayor's personal opinions, they have been quite dull in the last few weeks. Sotomayor's confirmation moved quickly to the full Senate and should wrap up this afternoon.
Even several Republican Senators have stated that they would confirm Judge Sotomayor. One particularly vocal conservative was Senator Kit Bond, a Republican from Missouri. Bond stated:
"There's been no significant finding against her. There's been no public uprising against her. I do not believe that the Constitution tells me that I should refuse to support her merely because I disagree with her on some cases. I will support her, I'll be proud for her, the community she represents, and the American dream she shows is possible."
Another Republican Senator, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire threw his support behind Sotomayor, saying that "Although Judge Sotomayor and I may not see eye-to-eye on all issues or share the same political ideologies, our democratic system should allow for such differences."
Sotomayor's opinions have been seen throughout her 17 years as a federal judge, and while Republicans including Bond and Gregg can agree to disagree, there is still concern on the part of other conservatives.
If confirmed, Sotomayor will be the first Hispanic on the Court, as well as the third female.
