I have had the great pleasure, for the past 20 years, of working in the heart of the Jersey Shore's
most quaint, historic, yet festive towns. Located off of exit 117 on the Garden State Parkway, Keyport is the first town you hit upon embracing "The Jersey Shore". It's location makes it very desirable for New Yorkers to live in splendor and commute to work . Within minutes of the train station, bus stops, and close to the Ferry, you'll find that most of it's residents (as with most of the Jersey Shore) are originally from Northern Jersey and New York. People who wanted the serenity, low crime, good school, and waterviews at an affordable price.
Keyport's History: The Kearny family settled the Keyport area in 1714. Their plantation, which featured timber and produce, prospered for over a century. The plantation was then divided and auctioned off, and Keyport was established in 1830. From then until about 1900, it was a major shipping center. In the mid-1800's, it was a major ship-building center as well.
From 1917 to 1937, Keyport was home to Aeromarine Plan & Motor Company, one of the pioneers in aviation. They introduced the first electric starter, first international airline, first metal-clad plane, and numerous other "firsts" in aviation.
Keyport's rich history is captured in the Steamboat Dock Museum at the foot of Broad Street at the Bay and the Keyport Fire Museum and Education Center on Broad Street.
Today, people from all over come to visit Keyport. The brand new Waterfront Park is absolutely breathtaking. Walk the pier, visit the quaint shops, the fabulous restaurants and coffee shops, and enjoy the outdoor music. Festivals, entertainment, and parades are common place in Keyport. It's definately a place worth stopping by and visiting.
If you've ever considered moving to the Jersey Shore, but want a short commute or a small historic town, check out Keyport.
If you Love Historic homes, this is the place to live. I personally have moved my office 15 minutes South of Keyport and now work in Red Bank NJ. Which, I'm sure needs no introduction to most people. Keyport is actually called "a mini Red Bank". However, I'll leave Red Bank for another article. But if you are interested in Keyport, call the two Realtors who are well known and sold homes there longer than any other in the industry, Everett and Sandra Nixon.
