After much anticipation it was exciting to finally see Michelle O's ball gown choice as she and President Barack Obama made appearences at over ten Inaugural balls last night. The First Lady went against convention and wore a full-length, Grecian-style, white chiffon gown by up-and-coming designer Jason Wu. She chose the New York designer based not only for his exquisite designs, but diverse background.
Back in December when the designer was asked whether he might design The First Lady's Inaugural ballgown, Mr. Wu wasn’t hopeful saying, “Oh, that’s a long shot!”
Mrs. Obama is known for going off the beaten fashion path with her knack for selecting unknown designers. A classic example, the Thakoon Panichgul dress she wore at the closing ceremony during the DNC at Invesco Field. Even the yellow brocade dress worn to yesterday's Inaugural ceremony by Cuban born designer Isabel Toledo was a surprise to many.
I my opinion it was a stunning choice by the First Lady and surpassed all expectations. Not too regal, simple, clean, yet cutting edge - a clever balancing act. President Obama said it himself, “...how good-looking is my wife?”
As per tradition, the dress will be donated to Washington’s Smithsonian Museum’s along with a collection of other memorable First Lady fashions..jpg)
