For Dallas nudists, aside from those who are members of local non-landed clubs that sponsor house parties, road trips are a fact of life. It would certainly be nice if some local clothing-optional venues would pop up but unless and until that happens, spending some nude time outside the house means a drive of an hour or more.

There are four private nudist landed clubs within reasonable driving distance, but for some cost is an issue. Besides the gasoline expense, the average day rate for grounds fees as of March 1, 2010, was $30 - $35 depending on the club. All the local landed clubs are great facilities and appreciated but sometimes a person wants a little different experience than what the club scene offers. Those willing to make a three and one-half hour drive south to Austin can find just such an experience.

Hippie Hollow Park

Hippie Hollow Park, located on Lake Travis about a half hour drive from downtown Austin, is considered by some a real Texas treasure. It is the only clothing optional public park in the state. Encompassing 109 scenic acres, Hippie Hollow is a day use only park open from 9:00 a.m. to dark daily. Because it is clothing optional, currently only those 18 years and up are admitted to the park.

Things to do

The park features a beach setting on a steep, rocky shoreline where nude sunbathing and skinny dipping are permitted. In addition there are nature hiking trails. There are public restrooms, drinking fountains and a seasonal snack bar.

Park fees

A day use permit for Hippie Hollow Park, as of March 1, 2010, was $10 per vehicle (plus a special $2 per person surcharge for this park), so using two people as an example, cost would be $7 per person, considerably less than the cost of a resort day visit. Frequent visitors can save even more by purchasing an annual park pass.

Cautions

Hippie Hollow is a unique Texas venue but there are a few things visitors need to be aware of since the park is a public place and aside from the clothing optional designation, subject to all the laws and park rules associated with all Austin public parks.

  • Nudity is acceptable, lewdness is not. Public lewdness will be prosecuted.
  • No glass containers are permitted in the park.
  • Open consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited, however park regulars maintain than canned beer can be safely consumed as long as the can is covered with can cozy.
  • Notwithstanding the above advice from park regulars, Austin public intoxication laws are also enforced.
  • Prepare for the possibility of encountering voyeurs. Since it is clothing optional and not a strictly nude public area, there are those who visit Hippie Hollow armed with telephoto lenses and prurient intentions.
