Short takes from the week in Colorado water:

Climate change makes an appearance at Nestle Waters hearings

Opponents of Nestle's plans to truck 200 acre-feet or so of water out of the Arkansas Basin over Trout Creek Pass and Kenosha Pass to Denver for bottling keep raising the issue of the unsustainability of the bottled water industry -- even absent reductions in water supplies due to climate change -- with Chaffee County Commissioners.

Last week Lee Hart (writing for the Salida Citizen) reported on the climate change discussion before the commissioners along with pointing to a letter to the county from ecologist Delia Malone. Their point is that the uncertainty about future water supplies in the county, along with the decline of the bottled water industry now occurring, that it is not responsible for the commissioners to approve Nestle's project. The county commissioners are working on the stipulations for Nestle's permit.

In a related story the town of Bundanoon located in New South Wales, Australia, banned bottled water and the scheme by a bottled water provider to pump water from their local aquifer.

23rd Annual Poudre River Festival

Folks had a grand time in and out of the river last Saturday while celebrating the Poudre and its beauty and wetness. Kayakers, tubers, picnickers, the City of Fort Collins Open Space effort, youngsters, oldsters and musicians all participated, according to a report in the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Wastewater and supply fees keep going up

Last week fee potential increases were announced in Pueblo, Log Lane Village, Carbondale and Basalt.

Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway District

The first meeting of the citizen advisory group for the district took place on Friday. The district is the outgrowth of the Fountain Creek Task Force and was authorized by legislation passed in this year's session. They hope to improve the Fountain Creek watershed with recreational amenities while improving water quality and reducing erosion and flooding along the creek.

Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel

Senator Udall and Representative Lamborn introduced a bill last week that will formally authorize the Bureau of Reclamation to treat water from the relief well above the collapsed portion of the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel up in Lake County. Readers may remember the hubbub around the potential catastrophic release of polluted mine water which prompted a disaster declaration by the Lake County Commissioners early in 2008.

Although the EPA's disaster scenario was debunked by Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers the relief well continues to deliver acid mine waste to Reclamation's plant at the mouth of the tunnel. The legislation will formally charge Reclamation with treatment and authorize funds to upgrade the plant.
