Short takes on the week in Colorado water:
Storage talk is all the rage
Up in northern Colorado proponents of the Northern Integrated Supply Project are planning a rally to show support for the project. They're reminding everyone that there is water flowing out of Colorado right now -- the South Platte is a free river -- that could be stored if everything wasn't already full.
Gravel pit storage is a topic of discussion east of Pueblo. Two area businessmen -- John Sliman owner of Southwest Farms and Bob Beltramo who operates Blue Grass gravel -- plan to develop storage out of gravel pits along the Arkansas River.
Southern Delivery System
Conservationists and Pueblo West are both hoping to slow down the permitting proces for Colorado Springs Utilities' proposed Southern Delivery System -- the pipeline and terminal storage necessary to develop Colorado Springs' water rights at Lake Pueblo. Impacts to Fountain Creek, including water quality, flooding and erosion are not being adequately addressed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers according to the Sierra Club.
Lower Arkansas Valley Regional water authority?
The Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District voted to allocate $14,000 to study the feasibility of a regional water authority. Cost sharing is the immediate benefit.
Water for Rueter-Hess
Parker is trying to determine how best to get water into Rueter-Hess. Current plans include recycled effluent and lower South Platte irrigation water changed to municipal use. South Metro water providers are also starting to get on board with the Colorado-Wyoming Coalitions hopes of building a pipeline from Flaming Gorge (replacing Aaron Million's pipeline).
Wyoming residents are not much enthused for Million's pipeline and probably won't get too excited by the coalition's plans either.
Western Governors Association Annual Meeting
Governor Ritter helped wrap up the annual meeting with a reminder to the lower basin states that there just isn't any extra water to develop in the Colorado River. He invited Californian's to pay the costs of desalination.
Colorado scores $25 million from the EPA for water
The EPA announced $25 million in stimulus funding for Colorado wastewater projects this week.
