Zebra and quagga mussel veligers -- the larval stage of the mussels -- have been found in Lake Pueblo. The finding was announced last week by Reclamation. Quaggas are generally worse than the zebras because they live at greater depths.
Officials are hoping that the lower levels of calcium in Colorado's water effects the growing cycle of the mussels. The discovery of the veligers usually portends a large infestation in subsequent years. Each quagga female can produce a million offspring at a time.
The Lake Pueblo news comes as Reclamation reports that zebra and quagga veligers have also been found in Colorado-Big Thompson reservoirs and Grand Lake.
